Sorting

1 Necessary and unnecessary items are mixed together in the work area.
2 Necessary and unnecessary items are separated (including excess inventory).
3 Unnecessary items have been removed from the work area.
4 A dependable, documented method has been established to maintain the work area free of unnecessary items.
5 Employees are continuously seeking improvement opportunities.

Simplifying

1 Tools, supplies and materials are randomly located.
2 A designated location has been established for items.
3 Designated locations are marked to make organization more visible.
4 5S agreements and SHEA work area requirements are understood and practiced continually.
5 Area employees have devised a dependable, documented method of preventive cleaning and maintenance.

 

Levels

Sweeping

1 Factories or offices and machinery/offices are dirty and disorganized.
2 Work and break areas are cleaned on a regularly scheduled basis.
3 SHEA requirements and cleaning requirements are applied to work and break areas.
4 5S agreements and SHEA requirements are understood and practiced continually.
5 Area employees have devised a method of preventive cleaning and maintenance.

Standardizing

1 No attempt is being made to document or improve current processes.
2 Methods are being improved but changes have not been documented.
3 Changes are being incorporated and documented.
4 Information on processes and method improvements is being shared.
5 Employees are continually seeking the elimination of waste with changes documented and information shared.

Self-Discipline

1 Minimal attention is spent on housekeeping and safety.
2 A recognized effort has been made to improve the condition of the work area.
3 5S agreements and SHEA practices have been developed and are used.
4 Follow-through of 5S agreements and SHEA practices are evident.
5 There is a general appearance of a confident understanding of and adherence to the 5S principles.
